Humane Education

3rdeditionwkbkcoverminiEncouraging Kind Minds

Nevada SPCA has been steadily expanding its humane education programs for the past 7 years, reaching students and people of all ages with messages of compassion, respect, and appreciation for animals.

The heart of our messages is that adoption is forever and that adopted animals are loving members of the family, not ornaments or decorations or temporary toys.

Nevada SPCA Humane Education Workbooks

We distribute these acclaimed, 24-page workbooks to children, students, libraries, classrooms, and youth groups upon request, at no charge.

These workbooks, and all of Nevada SPCA's humane education materials, are possible thanks to the proceeds of the annual Family, Fur, & Fun Festivals (more below).

Humane Education Presentations

Volunteer teachers and others regularly speak to classrooms (or at assemblies or other functions) and bring a rescued animal ambassador to emphasize concepts.  We work hard to attend every school (or function) invitation.  The presentations are free.  Please make humane education presentation requests through email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Tours of Nevada SPCA Headquarters

Tours generally last up to one hour and include educational sections on cats, dogs, rabbits, other species, adoption, training, and rehabilitation.  These require a lot of work and gathering of volunteers to assist, so we ask that you try to organize the tours as part of a large school or other youth group function and make requests by email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) at least 3 weeks in advance.  The tours are free.

Annual Family, Fur, & Fun Festival

Adults, children and other young people earn Animal Hero Badges by participating in fun, educational activities that help them learn about and better understand animals.

The Festival now attract more than 6,000 people each year.  It is held in early October and include animals for adoption, entertainment and music, low-cost microchipping, professional pet portraits, and much more.

The Festival is organized and operated by volunteers.  Attendance is free.  Sponsorship proceeds benefit Nevada SPCA's humane education programs.  More details.

Children's Books

We are currently finalizing the first children's book in the series and hope to have it published and distributed by the end of 2011.  The first book is about adoption into a forever home.  It was written by a volunteer teacher and features original artwork.  More details in the weeks and months to come.
